A Unifying Principle for Clause Elimination in First-Order Logic

چکیده
Preprocessing techniques for formulas in conjunctive normal form play an important role in first-order theorem proving. To speed up the proving process, these techniques simplify a formula without affecting its satisfiability or unsatisfiability. In this paper, we introduce the principle of implication modulo resolution, which allows us to lift several preprocessing techniques—in particular, several clause-elimination techniques—from the SAT-solving world to first-order logic. We analyze confluence properties of these new techniques and show how implication modulo resolution yields short soundness proofs for the existing firstorder techniques of predicate elimination and blocked-clause elimination.

Clausal Analysis of First-order Proof Schemata
Proof schemata are a variant of LK-proofs able to simulate various induction schemes in first-order logic by adding so called proof links to the standard first-order LK-calculus. Proof links allow proofs to reference proofs thus giving proof schemata a recursive structure. Unfortunately, applying reductive cutelimination is non-trivial in the presence of proof links. Borrowing the concept of la...
متن کاملThe Need for Ancestor Resolution When Answering Queries in Horn Clause Logic
Prolog Technology Theorem Proving. (PTTP) [5] is a well known extension of Prolog for answering queries in first-order logic. PTTP is based on the idea that ‘Prolog can be viewed as an “almost complete” theorem prover, which has to be extended by only a few ingredients in order to handle the non-Horn case’ [1]. As explained in [5], PTTP is an efficient realisation of the Model Elimination (ME) ...
متن کاملCERES in Propositional Proof Schemata
Cut-elimination is one of the most famous problems in proof theory, and it was defined and solved for first-order sequent calculus by Gentzen in his celebrated Hauptsatz. Ceres is a different cut-elimination algorithm for firstand higher-order classical logic. It is based on the notion of a characteristic set of clauses which is extracted from a proof in sequent calculus and is always unsatisfi...
متن کاملClause Trees: A Tool for Understanding and Implementing Resolution in Automated Reasoning
Abstract A new methodology/data structure, the clause tree, is developed for automated reasoning based on resolution in first order logic. A clause tree T on a set S of clauses is a 4-tuple , where N is a set of nodes, divided into clause nodes and atom nodes, E is a set of edges, each of which joins a clause node to an atom node, L is a labeling of N ∪ E which assigns to each clause n...
